Joshua Fought the Battle of Jericho

by Craig Thomas Naylor

This famous African-American Spiritual celebrates Old Testament warrior Joshua, who is known by many names in Jewish, Christian and Islamic writings. Songs of release from bondage were prominent with African-American slaves and their descendents who endured decades of prejudice following the passage of the Thirteenth Amendment. The idea of walls tumbling down represented freedoms denied yet carried in hearts, hopes and minds – freedoms which resonate in us all.
